Surveillance for respiratory, enteric and herpes viruses

ESR public health virology laboratory collates, analyses and reports all year round laboratory-based virological surveillance with public health importance from virology laboratories of Auckland, Waikato, Christchurch and Dunedin Hospitals, Microbiology Laboratory of Wellington Hospital and the public health virology laboratory of ESR.  These laboratories report viral diagnoses made, largely from hospital in-patients and outpatients, to ESR. These data are reported nationally in the ESR Virology Weekly Report.

These viruses include influenza, enteroviruses (coxsackie A & B, echovirus, polioviruses and other enteroviruses), adenoviruses, measles, mumps, rubella, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza (1, 2, 3), rhinovirus, vericella zoster virus, rotavirus, mycoplasma pneumonia and other emerging viruses.
