What indicators are available?

Ten environmental health issues are covered. Under each issue, there are a further three types of indicators- Health, Environment and Action indicators.

The environmental health issues identified by WHO for the indicator programme are Air quality, Housing, Traffic, Noise, Waste, Radiation, Water and Sanitation, Food Safety, Chemical Emergencies, and Workplace. (List of WHO indicators)

The environmental health issues currently being looked at in NZ are air quality, drinking and recreational water quality, radiation and traffic. The current set of indicators includes: -

AIR QUALITY

  • Number of vehicles person
  • Road transport fuel consumption
  • Emission of air pollutants
  • Ambient air pollution
  • Mortality due to Respiratory Diseases
  • Mortality due to Circulatory Diseases
  • Number of hospital admissions for Respiratory Diseases
  • Number of hospital admissions for Circulatory Diseases
  • Prescription rate for Asthma medication
  • Number of hospital admissions for Asthma

  • Drinking water compliance
  • Access to safe drinking water
  • Outbreaks of drinking waterborne diseases

  • Intensity of drinking water quality monitoring
